Universitas Negeri Padang

Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) is the result of converting the teachers' training college into a university, originally called the Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru (PTPG). Since its establishment on October 23, 1954, UNP has undergone many changes.
In the history of its development, the UNP transformations include its name, location, status, and educational programs. These changes have been developed to meet the country's growing educational demands. In brief, these changes can be classified into five periods, namely the PTPG Batusangkar period, the FKIP Andalas University period in Batusangkar period, the FKIP Andalas University Padang period, the IKIP Jakarta-Padang Branch period, the IKIP Padang period and the UNP period.

The transformation of IKIP Padang to Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) was stipulated by Presidential Decree Number 93, dated August 24, 1999. Previously, based on the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education Number 1499/D/1996 dated June 20, 1996, the Director General of Higher Education agreed to give the Padang IKIP a wider mandate to organize non-educational study programs while continuing to manage and develop education for teachers. Since the academic year of 1997/1998, IKIP Padang has started organizing various non-educational study programs as an extension of the mandate given by the government through the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture No. 1884/D/I/1997 dated August 1, 1997.
