UI GreenMetric Launches Sustainable City Rankings 2026 to Advance Inclusive, Resilient, and Data-Driven Cities
Depok, 13 August 2026 — UI GreenMetric, an initiative of Universitas Indonesia, has officially launched the UI GreenMetric Sustainable City Rankings 2026, a sustainability ranking for regencies and cities across Indonesia. Formerly known as UI GreenCityMetric, the program has been conducted since 2022 to encourage local governments to strengthen their commitment and implementation of sustainable development.
The 2026 edition carries the theme “The Future of Sustainable Cities and Regencies: Digital Transformation, Data Integration, and Collaborative Governance.” The launch introduced updates to the methodology, assessment system, and participation process, while highlighting the growing role of data and digital technologies in supporting sustainable local governance.
In 2025, the ranking was joined by 71 regencies and cities across Indonesia. Through the 2026 edition, UI GreenMetric continues to encourage local governments to use the ranking as a tool for evaluation, learning, and improvement in advancing sustainability performance.
“The Sustainable City Rankings 2026 is not simply a ranking, but a space for evaluation, learning, and collaboration for local governments. Through the use of data and AI, we hope to encourage tangible contributions toward more inclusive and resilient regencies and cities,” said Dr. Vishnu Juwono, Head of UI GreenMetric.
Integrating Data, AI, and Official Sources
One of the key updates in the 2026 edition is the integration of local government-submitted data with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data crawling from official sources. This approach is designed to support a more objective, transparent, and efficient assessment process while expanding the use of data in measuring local sustainability performance.
The platform has also been improved with a simpler interface, more intuitive navigation, and an easier evidence-upload process, enabling local governments to submit and document their data more effectively.
Six Sustainability Indicators
The UI GreenMetric Sustainable City Rankings 2026 assesses sustainability through six main indicators: 1. Spatial Planning and Infrastructure 2. Energy and Climate Change 3. Waste and Wastewater Management 4. Water Management 5. Accessibility and Mobility 6. Governance
Together, these indicators provide a broader perspective on the sustainability commitments and practices of participating regencies and cities.
Strengthening Collaborative Governance
As urbanization continues to create complex challenges for local governments—including environmental pressures, governance issues, and increasing risks from geometeorological hazards—strong and collaborative local governance is increasingly important.
The launch and socialization event brought together perspectives from government, academia, and other stakeholders. The event featured Dr. Heriyandi Roni, M.Si., Director of Regional Performance Evaluation and Capacity Building, Ministry of Home Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, alongside speakers from UI GreenMetric, the Association of Indonesian Regency Governments (APKASI), and Universitas Indonesia.
A panel discussion explored the importance of digital transformation, data integration, and collaborative governance in addressing sustainability challenges at the local level. Participants also joined a practical workshop on questionnaire submission and supporting evidence, facilitated by Rahmi, S.Hum., M.Sc., Ph.D., Manager of Operations, Data and Service Development at UI GreenMetric.
2026 Ranking Timeline
The UI GreenMetric Sustainable City Rankings 2026 will be conducted through three main stages: • Data Submission: August–October 2026 • Data Validation: November 2026 • Results Announcement: December 2026
During the data submission period, participating regencies and cities will complete the questionnaire and upload supporting evidence through the official UI GreenMetric platform.
The UI GreenMetric Sustainable City Rankings 2026 Guideline is also available to support participants with information on indicators, operational definitions, submission procedures, and evidence requirements.
