Advancing Sustainable Higher Education in Italy: UI GreenMetric Hosts 17th Regional Information Session with the University of L’Aquila
On June 5, 2026, UI GreenMetric successfully organized its 17th Regional Information Session in collaboration with the University of L’Aquila. The session brought together representatives from higher education institutions across Italy to discuss sustainable campus development through governance, digitalization, and integrated performance. Conducted entirely in Italian, the event provided a valuable platform for participants to exchange knowledge, explore sustainability strategies, and strengthen collaboration among universities committed to advancing sustainable higher education.
The session commenced with opening remarks delivered by Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, and Prof. Anna Tozzi, Advisor to the Rector of the University of L’Aquila. In their remarks, they highlighted the growing responsibility of universities to address sustainability challenges and emphasized the importance of integrating sustainability principles into institutional governance, operations, education, and research. They also underscored the value of international cooperation in supporting universities’ efforts to achieve long-term sustainability goals.
The event was moderated by Dr. Luciana Sacchetti, Consultant for University Rankings at the University of Bologna, who guided participants throughout the program and facilitated discussions among university representatives from across Italy.
The main presentation was delivered by Dr. Massimiliano D’Innocenzo from the Fundraising Sector and University Project Management Office of the University of L’Aquila. His presentation focused on sustainability initiatives and institutional practices within the Italian higher education context. He highlighted the importance of strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and project-based approaches in fostering sustainable campus development. Participants also gained insights into how universities can strengthen sustainability performance through effective governance and cross-sector collaboration.
The QnA session was led by Rahmi, S.Hum., M.Sc., Ph.D., Manager of Operations, Data, and Service Development of UI GreenMetric. Rahmi introduced participants to the UI GreenMetric framework and provided a comprehensive overview of its methodology, indicators, and participation process. The presentation emphasized the importance of governance, digitalization, and integrated performance in measuring and improving institutional sustainability. Participants also learned about sustainability tracking mechanisms, data management practices, and opportunities to engage with the global UI GreenMetric network.
During the discussion session, participants exchanged perspectives on sustainability challenges and opportunities facing universities in Italy and beyond. Questions focused on the implementation of sustainability initiatives, data collection and reporting processes, institutional governance, and strategies for improving sustainability performance. The discussion also highlighted the role of international collaboration in accelerating the adoption of best practices and fostering innovation in sustainable higher education.
The 17th Regional Information Session reflects UI GreenMetric’s ongoing commitment to strengthening sustainability awareness and institutional capacity among universities worldwide. Through its collaboration with the University of L’Aquila and the delivery of the session in Italian, UI GreenMetric continues to support regional engagement while promoting global dialogue on sustainability in higher education.
