Global Rectors’ Summit in Tajikistan: UI GreenMetric and IUTE Unite Global Campuses for Real Climate Action

DUSHANBE, TAJIKISTAN – April 14, 2026 – Entering a crucial period for sustainable development, UI GreenMetric, in collaboration with the International University of Tourism and Entrepreneurship (IUTE) Tajikistan, is hosting the Summit of Rectors of Green Universities. Taking place from April 14 to 17, this event marks a vital momentum for higher education institutions to move from fragmented plans toward systemic and tangible execution on the ground. The meeting highlights that, amidst global climate and economic challenges, universities can no longer operate in isolation.

This summit marked a historic occasion, bringing together leaders in global higher education committed to the principles of environmental sustainability. The forum saw the direct participation of 500 people from 50 universities and 54 countries. In addition to leaders from leading universities, the event includes international delegates, experts in sustainable development, and representatives from global development agencies. One of the key features of the event is the active participation of educational institutions from the Global South, as this region is projected to be a decisive factor in shaping the Earth’s sustainable future. The presence of senior university leaders ensures that every agreed-upon formulation can be directly implemented as official policy within their respective institutions.

In his opening speech, the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, Dr. Vishnu Juwono, emphasized the narrowing window of time to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Citing United Nations reports, current global progress is deemed very slow and in an alarming state due to climate pressures and geopolitical uncertainty.

"This 17 percent achievement figure is not progress; it is a danger alarm. If we continue to move this slowly, we are not solving global inequality, but rather allowing it to become a permanent problem," stressed Dr. Vishnu Juwono.

As the pioneer and global benchmark for ranking environmentally sustainable universities, UI GreenMetric has demonstrated that universities possess enormous economic and operational potential. According to data collected on an ongoing basis, universities that implement sustainability standards can reduce energy consumption by 30 percent while integrating infrastructure and resource management much more effectively. With a total of more than 235 million students worldwide, higher education institutions serve as agents of long-term change, capable of shaping social behavior and preparing future leaders.

As the host, IUTE Tajikistan plays a strategic role in facilitating this cross-national dialogue. Holding the summit in Dushanbe underscores that universities in developing countries are now at the forefront of shaping the direction of global adaptation to climate change. IUTE Tajikistan’s actions demonstrate the region’s commitment to integrating the ecological transition with digital progress, ensuring that technological advancements, such as artificial intelligence, align harmoniously with environmental protection and do not exacerbate existing Issues.

Furthermore, this forum encourages all parties to transform campus sustainability data into concrete policies linked to large-scale green financing from institutions like the Asian Development Bank. Closing his speech, Dr. Vishnu Juwono reminded the audience of the fundamental role that higher education institutions must take.

"The defining challenge of this era is not whether transformation is necessary, but whether that transformation can be realized fast enough. The defining institutions of the future are not those operating within the system, but those capable of redesigning the system itself. Universities must be among those institutions," Dr. Vishnu concluded.
