UI GreenMetric Meets with the Association of Arab Universities to Push for Sustainable Practices in Campuses

On April 20, 2026, UI GreenMetric reinforced its commitment to global environmental stewardship by hosting a high-level Regional Information Session specifically tailored for higher education institutions across the Arab world. Organized in close collaboration with the Association of Arab Universities (AArU), the Regional Information Session served as a vital platform for academic leaders to explore the intersection of sustainability, governance, digitalization, and institutional performance. The session, which ran from 11:00 to 13:10 AST, saw a remarkable turnout from representatives across various time zones, signalling a unified regional drive toward integrating sustainability into the core of academic strategy. The Event was steered by Rayhana S.Gz. the Partnerships and Program Coordinator of UI GreenMetric who was the MC of the event.

The proceedings commenced with distinguished opening remarks from Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, alongside Prof. Anas Ratib Alsoud, Executive Director of the Association of Arab Universities. Both leaders emphasized that the transition toward a green campus is no longer a peripheral objective but a fundamental necessity for modern universities. Prof. Alsoud specifically highlighted how adopting these concepts enables Arab institutions to address pressing developmental challenges while simultaneously bolstering their competitiveness and visibility within global ranking frameworks. The dialogue underscored the belief that sustainability must be woven into the very fabric of institutional policy to ensure long-term resilience and impact.

A central highlight of the event was an in-depth presentation by Rahmi, S.Hum., M.Sc., Ph.D., Manager of Operations, Data, and Service Development at UI GreenMetric. Dr. Rahmi provided a comprehensive roadmap for navigating the UI GreenMetric framework, focusing on how data-driven governance and digital transformation can catalyze environmental improvements. By shifting the focus toward integrated performance, the session illustrated how universities can move beyond mere compliance to become true innovators in sustainable operations. This technical guidance provided member institutions with the practical tools needed to align their daily operations with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This strategic partnership with the AArU comes at a time of unprecedented growth for the UI GreenMetric network, which now proudly serves 1,745 universities across 105 countries. By facilitating this exchange of knowledge and capacity building, UI GreenMetric continues to expand its reach, ensuring that the Arab region remains at the forefront of the global green campus movement. This collaboration not only strengthens the international presence of participating universities but also fosters a collective culture of sustainability that transcends borders, ultimately contributing to a more resilient global academic community.
