UI GreenMetric Supports UMS Seminar on Strengthening Sustainable Campus Governance

SURAKARTA, 21 July, 2026 – UI GreenMetric supported the Seminar on Strengthening Sustainable Campus Governance and Higher Education–Local Government Synergy in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), hosted by Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS). Serving as the event’s media partner, UI GreenMetric reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainability across higher education by promoting knowledge exchange, cross-sector collaboration, and robust institutional governance.

The seminar convened university leaders, government representatives, academics, and sustainability practitioners to discuss how higher education institutions can integrate sustainable principles into their governance systems while building strategic synergies with regional governments. Participants agreed that driving the SDGs requires more than standalone environmental projects—it demands long-term institutional commitment, strategic planning, and structural integration.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Harun Joko Prayitno, M.Hum, Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, stressed that sustainability must evolve into a shared institutional culture. He called for the development of a holistic campus ecosystem that connects education, innovation, governance, and community engagement, while encouraging universities nationwide to take active roles in global initiatives.

Prof. Harun also expressed his appreciation for UI GreenMetric’s ongoing global impact: "UI GreenMetric has become a vital catalyst in guiding universities toward sustainable transformation. Its indicators and established best practices serve as essential references for higher education institutions everywhere."

He further encouraged more Indonesian universities to utilize the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings as a tool for continuous evaluation and institutional growth.

Representing UI GreenMetric, Dr. Abellia Anggi Wardani S.Hum M.A., Vice Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, expressed gratitude to UMS for organizing a forum that addresses a critical dimension of higher education leadership.

Dr. Abellia emphasized that campus sustainability extends far beyond physical or environmental initiatives like green spaces, waste management, and energy conservation. Instead, it must be embedded directly into decision-making frameworks, strategic planning, and overall organizational policy.

She also highlighted a major development in the ranking methodology: the introduction of the Governance and Digitalization indicator. This addition reflects the growing necessity of transparent governance, accountable leadership, centralized data management, and digital transformation in building resilient universities. Good governance, she noted, creates the structural foundation required for efficient operations, transparent reporting, and continuity across leadership transitions.

Adding operational context, Dr. Rahmi S.Hum M.Sc. PhD., Manager of Operations, Data, and Service Development at UI GreenMetric, shared insights from Universitas Indonesia’s experience in implementing integrated campus management.

She explained that effective sustainability frameworks must encompass every facet of campus operations, from budgeting and academic curricula to research, community engagement, and performance evaluation.
