Universitas Pekalongan Strengthens Green Campus Commitment Through Collaboration with UI GreenMetric
11 September 2026
PEKALONGAN, INDONESIA – Universitas Pekalongan (Unikal) is strengthening its commitment to sustainable campus development through a Capacity Building Green Campus programme held on 10 September 2026. The programme brought together Unikal, UI GreenMetric and the Pekalongan City Government to promote a shared approach to sustainability and environmental management.

The programme featured Dr. Vishnu Juwono, Chairman of UI GreenMetric, and Hj. Balgis Diab, Vice Mayor of Pekalongan, alongside Unikal’s leadership and academic community. For Unikal, the initiative goes beyond improving its sustainability ranking. The university wants sustainability to become part of its strategic planning and a shared responsibility across the campus.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Andi Kushermanto, Rector of Universitas Pekalongan, stressed that a Green Campus is not simply about having large green spaces.
“Green Campus is not only about spatial planning, but about the university’s ability to use resources efficiently.”
Unikal has begun implementing practical measures, including automatic water taps, waste separation and waste management, while encouraging students to consider electric motorcycles. The university is also integrating sustainability into its quality assurance system and developing formal policies to ensure that environmental responsibility becomes part of institutional governance.
Building a Sustainable Campus Culture
During the programme, Dr. Vishnu Juwono presented on “Strengthening the Green Campus Mindset: From Awareness to a Sustainable Campus Culture.” He highlighted the importance of involving students, lecturers and staff in daily sustainability practices.

“Sustainability becomes a common language. Every member of the campus community feels responsible, and sustainable practices are carried out in an integrated and consistent way”, said Dr. Vishnu.
The collaboration with UI GreenMetric will support Unikal in planning sustainability programmes, developing action plans, measuring progress and evaluating their impact.
From Campus Action to Citywide Impact
The Pekalongan City Government also welcomed the initiative. Vice Mayor Balgis Diab expressed hope that Unikal’s approach could become a model for other educational institutions.
“We hope that the collaboration with Unikal can become a model and be replicated by other universities. We can improve environmental management through the campus.”
The programme also featured the presentation of a policy brief prepared by Unikal lecturers and students, containing recommendations on integrated data for flood management, land subsidence and groundwater use, and coastal protection through mangrove planting.

The partnership between Universitas Pekalongan, UI GreenMetric and the Pekalongan City Government demonstrates that a Green Campus does not have to stop at the campus gate. When universities use their knowledge, people and resources to work with local governments and communities, sustainability can become a shared agenda—and potentially a model that can be replicated elsewhere.
