Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia Advances Sustainable Agriculture Through Smart Composter Innovation

BANDAR LAMPUNG, INDONESIA – As a member of the UI GreenMetric network, Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia (UTI) continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable innovation through the development of a Smart Composter, a technology designed to process cattle manure into valuable organic fertilizer. Developed by lecturers and students from the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science in collaboration with Sandjaya Farm, the innovation integrates technology and sustainable agricultural practices to address waste management challenges in the livestock sector.

The Smart Composter provides a practical solution for transforming cattle manure, which can otherwise become an environmental burden, into a useful agricultural product. By applying an automated composting process, the technology supports more efficient organic waste management while creating opportunities to generate economic value from livestock waste. The initiative demonstrates how technological innovation can contribute to more sustainable practices across both agriculture and livestock farming.

The development of the Smart Composter reflects Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia’s approach to connecting academic expertise with real-world challenges. The technology builds on Internet of Things (IoT)-based systems to support the monitoring and optimization of the composting process. Previous development of the Digital Smart Composter has incorporated sensors to monitor parameters such as temperature, humidity, pH, and ammonia levels, with data accessible through a digital monitoring system.

The innovation was also showcased at the 2025 Science, Technology, and Innovation Competition (KSTI) Indonesia, held at the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). The event brought together researchers, academics, innovators, and practitioners to showcase technological solutions developed by Indonesian institutions. The Smart Composter attracted attention from national academic and government leaders, highlighting the potential of university-developed technology to be further developed and applied in society.

The Smart Composter has also received recognition in national innovation activities. In 2025, the Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia team received third place and the Best Expo award at the Pekan Inovasi Mahasiswa Pertanian Indonesia (PIMPI), presenting its work on IoT-based Smart Composter technology for processing cattle waste into compost and supporting the development of sustainable green communities.

From a sustainability perspective, the initiative demonstrates the potential of integrating waste management, digital technology, agriculture, and community empowerment. By converting livestock waste into organic fertilizer, the innovation can help reduce waste accumulation while supporting soil fertility and reducing dependence on conventional agricultural inputs. The approach also illustrates how research and innovation within universities can be translated into practical solutions for local communities and productive sectors.

The initiative is closely connected with the sustainability principles promoted through the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings, particularly in the areas of waste management, education and research, and innovation for sustainability. By developing technology that addresses an environmental challenge while supporting agricultural productivity, Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia demonstrates the role of higher education institutions in advancing solutions that connect environmental responsibility with community and economic benefits.

UI GreenMetric appreciates the efforts of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia in developing and disseminating technological innovation for sustainable agriculture and livestock management. The Smart Composter demonstrates that meaningful sustainability solutions can emerge when universities, researchers, students, and industry partners work together to address challenges in their surrounding communities. Such initiatives can serve as inspiration for higher education institutions to strengthen the connection between research, technology, environmental sustainability, and real-world impact.
