University of São Paulo Hosts UI GreenMetric National Annual Meeting to Advance Sustainability in Higher Education
SÃO PAULO, 15 June 2026 — The University of São Paulo (USP) hosted the UI GreenMetric National Annual Meeting, bringing together university leaders, sustainability experts, and academic stakeholders to discuss the future of sustainable higher education. The event featured the seminar “Sustainable Universities: Challenges and Learnings in a Changing World,” highlighting the evolving role of universities in addressing environmental, social, and governance challenges amid global change. The seminar opened with remarks from distinguished representatives of both USP and UI GreenMetric. Among the attendees were Prof. Aluisio Segurado, Rector of the University of São Paulo; Prof. Amâncio Jorge de Oliveira, Pro-Rector of Culture and Extension at USP; Prof. Patrícia Iglecias, Superintendent of Environmental Management at USP; Prof. Carlos Eduardo Cerri, Deputy Dean of Research at USP; Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Chairperson of UI GreenMetric; and Dr. Abellia Anggi Wardani, Expert Member of UI GreenMetric.
Hosting this National Annual Meeting underscores USP’s strong commitment to sustainability and global environmental stewardship. In the 2025 ranking period, the university achieved an impressive 5th place globally in the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings, one of the most recognized international sustainability assessment frameworks for higher education institutions. This achievement demonstrates USP’s continuous efforts to integrate sustainability principles into campus operations, academic activities, and institutional governance.
Established in 2010 by Universitas Indonesia, UI GreenMetric evaluates universities worldwide based on a comprehensive set of sustainability indicators, including setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water resources, transportation, and education and research. Over the years, the ranking has become a leading global platform encouraging universities to improve sustainability performance and share best practices.
During the seminar, participants exchanged experiences and insights regarding the challenges and opportunities facing universities in a rapidly changing world. Discussions emphasized the importance of institutional collaboration, innovative environmental management strategies, and the integration of sustainability into education and research to create long-term positive impacts for society. The successful organization of the event further strengthens the partnership between USP and the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings Network. By bringing together sustainability leaders and higher education stakeholders, the National Annual Meeting serves as an important platform for advancing dialogue, sharing knowledge, and accelerating sustainability initiatives across universities worldwide.
