UI GreenMetric World University Rankings Meets with the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia to Synergize National Sustainable Development Strategies
UI GreenMetric continues to expand its cross-sector engagement to strengthen sustainability awareness and implementation at the national level. Following constructive coordination with ministries overseeing higher education and science, UI GreenMetric recognizes the strategic role of government institutions in shaping policies and regulatory frameworks that extend sustainable practices beyond campuses and into cities, regions, and local administrations.
During an official visit, the UI GreenMetric delegation, led by Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A.. Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, accompanied by Sabrina Hikmah Ramadianti, S.Si., Program, Partnership, and Communications Manager, Jauzak Hussaini W., S.Kom., M.T., and Anin Kumala S.Hum. met with Dr. Drs. Amran, M.T., representative of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The meeting focused on exploring collaboration to align sustainability indicators with regional governance, urban development, and smart city initiatives. Discussions emphasized the importance of integrating measurable sustainability performance into local government systems to ensure that environmental responsibility is embedded not only within universities but also across municipalities and provincial administrations.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has actively promoted the development of smart and sustainable cities through technological innovation and improved urban management. Key urban challenges including population density, congestion, waste management, water systems, and sanitation require coordinated governance and modern solutions supported by cross-sector partnerships. This approach aligns closely with UI GreenMetric’s principles of data-driven evaluation, benchmarking, and continuous improvement. In line with national development targets and the Indonesia Emas 2045 vision, the Ministry encourages structured urban assessments and standardized sustainability practices for regional governments, from metropolitan areas to smaller cities. Collaboration with UI GreenMetric can complement these efforts by providing internationally recognized metrics, performance evaluation tools, and best practices to support evidence-based policymaking.
UI GreenMetric can be a valuable partner for the ministry as one of it’s services the UI GreenMetric Sustainable City Rankings has been a measurement system that is both reliable and quantifiable. The rankings has been used by 71 different cities and regencies in Indonesia. UI GreenMetric Sustainable City Rankings assesses participants' sustainability based on six comprehensive indicators: land use and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water management, accessibility and mobility, and governance. Using these indicators, UI GreenMetric continues to promote sustainable practices at both the municipal and regional levels.Through benchmarking, capacity building, and knowledge sharing, UI GreenMetric aims to assist the Ministry in encouraging local governments to adopt measurable sustainability indicators and transparent evaluation mechanisms. This cooperation is expected to accelerate the realization of smart, safe, and sustainable cities across Indonesia.
The meeting marks an important step in expanding UI GreenMetric’s contribution beyond the higher education sector into broader governance frameworks. By strengthening collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs, UI GreenMetric reaffirms its commitment to supporting sustainable development nationwide and advancing Indonesia’s transition toward a more resilient and sustainable future.
