Building Resilient Campuses for a Changing Climate through Climate Adaptation Dialogue at UIN Raden Intan Lampung
LAMPUNG, 4 June 2026 – As climate-related disasters become increasingly frequent across Indonesia, universities are being called upon to play a more active role in strengthening resilience through sustainable planning and infrastructure development. In commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, UIN Raden Intan Lampung organized a webinar entitled "Climate Change Mitigation through Strengthening Spatial Planning and Campus Infrastructure Adaptive to Flood Risks" on Wednesday, 3 June 2026. The event brought together university leaders, academics, and students to discuss how higher education institutions can respond to the growing challenges posed by climate change.
The webinar reflects UIN Raden Intan Lampung’s longstanding commitment to environmental sustainability and its vision of becoming a leading environmentally conscious Islamic university. As one of Indonesia’s most active participants in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the university has consistently integrated sustainability principles into campus management, infrastructure development, and institutional governance. In 2025, UIN Raden Intan Lampung ranked 10th nationally and maintained its position as the top-ranked State Islamic Higher Education Institution (PTKIN) in Indonesia.
Representing UI GreenMetric, Chairperson Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A. delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change through strategic planning and collaborative action. He noted that climate change is no longer a distant concern but a reality that affects communities every day through increasingly frequent floods, extreme rainfall, rising temperatures, and the growing vulnerability of urban and campus environments to hydrometeorological disasters.
According to Dr. Vishnu, spatial planning should no longer be viewed merely as an administrative instrument. Instead, it must function as a tool for risk mitigation and public protection. He stressed that future campus development must prioritize both resilience and sustainability, arguing that resilient campuses play a crucial role in fostering resilient societies. He further highlighted that climate change represents a challenge that transcends disciplines, sectors, and generations, requiring collective efforts from all stakeholders.
The importance of climate resilience was also highlighted by Prof. Wan Jamaluddin Z., M.Ag., Ph.D., Rector of UIN Raden Intan Lampung. In his remarks, he explained that Bandar Lampung and its surrounding districts remain highly vulnerable to various natural hazards, particularly flooding. This reality, he stated, demands that the university community think strategically and act responsibly when planning and managing campus spaces. Through thoughtful spatial management and sustainable infrastructure development, universities can better prepare for environmental challenges while safeguarding the wellbeing of their communities.
The webinar also featured Dr.-Ing. Ir. Ova Candra Dewi, S.T., M.Sc., GP, IPU, an expert in urban and regional planning from Universitas Indonesia. Her presentation explored practical approaches to climate change mitigation through adaptive spatial planning and flood-resilient infrastructure. Participants were introduced to strategies that integrate environmental considerations, disaster risk reduction, and long-term sustainability into the development of urban areas and educational campuses.
The discussion closely aligns with the objectives of the Setting and Infrastructure category within the UI GreenMetric methodology, which encourages universities to create environmentally responsible, efficient, and resilient campus environments. As climate risks continue to intensify, the role of higher education institutions extends beyond education and research; campuses must also serve as living laboratories that demonstrate sustainable solutions and adaptive practices for society.
Through this collaboration, UI GreenMetric and UIN Raden Intan Lampung reaffirm their shared commitment to advancing sustainability in higher education. By strengthening awareness, encouraging participation, and promoting innovative approaches to climate adaptation, both institutions aim to contribute to the development of campuses that are not only environmentally sustainable but also resilient in the face of future challenges.
