UI GreenMetric Collaborates in a webinar with Universitas Hassanudin to discuss Sustainable Transportation in Campuses
On March 31, 2026, Universitas Hasanuddin hosted a webinar dedicated to exploring sustainable transportation strategies within university environments. Conducted in Indonesian, the event featured a series of in-depth presentations by experts from Universitas Hasanuddin and Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA) who are the leading Indonesian universities on sustainable transportation in the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings. The discussions centered on the pivotal role of higher education institutions in pioneering eco-friendly mobility, emphasizing the reduction of private vehicle dependency, the promotion of electric bicycles, and the seamless integration of smart technology into campus infrastructure.
The webinar commenced with opening remarks from Prof. Dr. Ir. Arifuddin Akil, M.T., Head of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Universitas Hasanuddin, and Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Chairperson of UI GreenMetric. Moderated by Ir. Nurul Masyiah Rani Harusi, S.T., M.Eng., the session featured keynote insights from Dr. Eng. Ir. IB. Ilham Malik, S.T., M.T., IPM, ASEAN Eng., who is a Lecturer of the Urban and Regional planning Program of Institut Teknologi Sumatera, and Dr.-Ing. Ir. Venny Veronica Natalia, S.T., M.T., who is a Lecturer of the Urban and Regional planning Program at Universitas Hassanudin.
The presentations highlighted the ongoing efforts of both institutions to mitigate the environmental impact of commuting. Acknowledging that transportation is a significant contributor to carbon emissions, both ITERA and Universitas Hasanuddin identified the high volume of student commutes via private motorcycles and cars as a primary challenge. To address this, the universities showcased various active solutions, including the deployment of electric shuttle buses, the provision of electric bikes, and the expansion of dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths.
Furthermore, the speakers underscored the necessity of policy advocacy with local governments to ensure that sustainability initiatives extend beyond campus borders. Universitas Hasanuddin, for instance, has successfully advocated for the extension of city bus routes to its campus. Meanwhile, ITERA detailed its roadmap for a sustainable transportation program that integrates smart mobility technologies with physical infrastructure. These institutional commitments are reflected in their 2025 UI GreenMetric world rankings, where ITERA and Universitas Hasanuddin placed 65th and 85th, respectively.
Ultimately, these initiatives represent a comprehensive commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By reducing air pollution and promoting active lifestyles (SDG 3), ensuring safe and inclusive access to education (SDG 4), and fostering gender equality in transport research and facilities (SDG 5), these universities are leading by example. The shift toward clean energy (SDG 7), innovative infrastructure (SDG 9), and low-impact transportation (SDG 13) not only lowers carbon footprints but also supports economic growth (SDG 8) and protects terrestrial ecosystems (SDG 15). Through shared mobility (SDG 12) and strengthened partnerships (SDG 17), both institutions are building the foundation for inclusive, safe, and resilient urban mobility systems (SDG 11) that will serve as a blueprint for sustainable development in the region.
This event marks significant progress in the collective pursuit of global sustainable development. UI GreenMetric expresses its hope that other universities will be inspired to implement similar initiatives and programs, fostering a sustainable future across campuses worldwide. Following this momentum, registration for the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings has officially opened. As a reputable and comprehensive benchmarking system, the rankings reached a milestone in 2025 by including 1,745 universities from 105 countries. By participating, higher education institutions can effectively measure, evaluate, and enhance their sustainability efforts on a global scale.
