YOGYAKARTA, 2-4 June, 2026 – The global discourse on sustainability is rapidly shifting from academic theory to practical, systemic execution. At the joint opening of The 11th ICRIEMS and The 8th ICE-ELINVO 2026 hosted by Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, UI GreenMetric brought a critical perspective to the international forum: true sustainability cannot rely solely on ecological policies, but must be anchored by a fundamental transformation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and vocational education.

Attending as a keynote speaker, UI GreenMetric Chairperson Dr. Vishnu Juwono challenged the conventional narrative of environmentalism by linking sustainability directly to economic resilience and workforce readiness. Drawing from the structural models of global industrial powerhouses like South Korea and China, Dr. Juwono highlighted that long-term sustainable growth is historical proof of robust investments in technical and vocational education. When governments, industry giants, and educational institutions operate in absolute sync, the transition toward a green economy becomes an achievable reality rather than a conceptual goal.

This systemic alignment is particularly urgent as Indonesia navigates its trajectory toward Indonesia Emas 2045. The rapid evolution of the manufacturing, energy, and construction sectors has triggered an unprecedented demand for specialized expertise in renewable energy, AI-driven operations, and sustainable infrastructure. However, a persistent challenge remains in bridging the gap between current graduate competencies and these highly technical, digitalized industry demands. Vocational education, therefore, must step up as the primary catalyst to supply a workforce that is not only technically proficient but also hardwired with a sustainability mindset.

The dialogue on future-ready academic frameworks was further enriched by Prof. Wu-Yuin Hwang from National Dong Hwa University, who brought the dimension of digital transformation into the sustainability equation. His insights on leveraging Artificial Intelligence for cross-cultural, personalized learning highlighted how technological integration can secure long-term educational sustainability in an increasingly digitalized world.

By driving this narrative at a high-level international conference, UI GreenMetric utilized its expansive global network—which now connects over 1,700 universities worldwide—to champion a singular, definitive point. Sustainability can no longer be treated as an isolated, optional discipline. It is an urgent, interdisciplinary imperative that must be woven directly into technical training, technological innovation, and the foundational fabric of vocational education to prepare the next generation for a rapidly changing global landscape.
