UINSU Steps Up Sustainability Efforts in New Collaboration with UI GreenMetric
On the 15th of April 2026, Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara (UINSU) conducted an official visit to the UI GreenMetric meeting room, located on the 5th floor of the Science Techno Park Building at Universitas Indonesia. Representing UINSU, Prof. Dr. Ir. M. Idris, M.P. met with the UI GreenMetric delegation led by Rahmi S.Hum., M.Sc., PhD, Manager of Operations, Data, and Service Development; Prof. Dr. Ir. Raldi Artono Koestoer, DEA, Assessor of UI GreenMetric; Rayhana S.Gz, Partnership & Program Coordinator; and Muhamad Ferdy Firmansyah, S.E., M.Sc., Partnership Officer. This meeting took place against the backdrop of Indonesia’s pressing environmental challenges, where recent ecological issues and events like the Sumatra floods have highlighted the urgent need for sustainable development to ensure long-term regional stability and safety.
The primary focus of the discussion was UINSU’s further participation in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the newly introduced 7th field in the rankings: Governance & Digitalization. This collaboration marks a significant step in advancing sustainability across Indonesia, building upon UINSU’s existing foundation of community support programs, its dedication to sustainability as a spiritual cause, and its ongoing environmental studies regarding the ecological landscape of North Sumatra. Drawing from the framework of ecotheology, environmental degradation is not solely a technical or ecological issue but fundamentally reflects a deeper moral and spiritual crisis rooted in humanity’s disconnection from nature (Kementerian Agama Republik Indonesia, 2025). As outlined in the same framework, sustainability must be understood as the integration of faith (iman), knowledge (ilmu), and action (amal), where environmental stewardship becomes part of a broader ethical and spiritual obligation rather than a purely institutional agenda (Kementerian Agama Republik Indonesia, 2025). In this sense, higher education institutions are positioned not only as centers of research and innovation but also as moral agents that shape value-driven approaches to sustainability, bridging global standards with local wisdom and spiritual responsibility. The UI GreenMetric framework can transform ecotheological theory into measurable accountability, serving as a spiritual audit of how effectively we are fulfilling our role as stewards of the Earth. The new field of Governance & Digitalization can be used on how higher educational. By adopting the new criteria of Governance and Digitalization, UINSU acknowledges that sustainability is a matter of ethics and integrity. Digital transparency becomes a tool for 'Amanah' (trustworthiness), ensuring that institutional resources are managed in harmony with divine and natural laws.
This partnership aligns UINSU’s local initiatives with a globally recognized measurement system. UI GreenMetric’s Sustainable University Rankings currently include 1,745 participating universities across 105 countries, providing a robust framework for institutional growth. By integrating these standards, higher educational institutions can transition from addressing environmental crises to proactively building a resilient, green future.
