Universitas Warmadewa Strengthens Community-Based Waste Management Through Sustainable Warmadewa Ecohub
DENPASAR, BALI – As a member university of the UI GreenMetric network, Universitas Warmadewa (Unwar) reinforces its commitment to sustainable waste management through the Sustainable Warmadewa Ecohub initiative. This program focuses on strengthening the capacity of several Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Waste Treatment Sites (TPS3R) in Bali by integrating academic research, community empowerment, and circular solutions.
Through the Sustainable Warmadewa Ecohub, Universitas Warmadewa establishes a collaborative hub that bridges academic research with real-world community action. This initiative facilitates research and community service activities to drive collective behavioral shifts in waste management through structured education and community mentoring.
A core pillar of the program is the implementation of source sorting methods. By consistently separating organic and inorganic waste at the source, downstream processing becomes significantly more efficient, while optimizing the economic value of recyclable materials.
In addition to waste separation, Universitas Warmadewa promotes the Eco-Enzyme Movement, an educational campaign aimed at processing household organic waste into versatile, eco-friendly liquid. This liquid is repurposed as natural cleaners and organic fertilizers, effectively reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills.
Furthermore, Unwar has transformed the Sapuh Jagat Gulingan TPS3R into an environmental learning space and a community-based eco-tourism destination. This innovative approach demonstrates that waste management facilities can be repurposed into public education hubs to champion the principles of a circular economy.
Universitas Warmadewa’s strategic steps align with the Waste (WS) category in the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings criteria. This category accounts for 17% of the total assessment, measuring the extent to which higher education institutions implement comprehensive waste management. Specifically, the implementation of source sorting supports the Recycling Program for University Waste (WS1). Meanwhile, the Eco-Enzyme movement serves as a tangible action in Toxic Waste Handled (WS2) by reducing domestic chemical waste, as well as Organic Waste Treatment (WS3) and Inorganic Waste Treatment (WS4) through the optimized operations of the integrated TPS3R.
UI GreenMetric highly appreciates the dissemination of best practices demonstrated by Universitas Warmadewa. This close collaboration between higher education institutions and local communities underscores the vital role of universities, not merely as ivory towers, but as driving forces for innovation and environmental sustainability at the grassroots level.
