Universitas Negeri Padang Strengthens Green Campus Commitment Through Tree Planting Initiative
PADANG, INDONESIA – Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) continues to strengthen its commitment to creating a greener, healthier, and more sustainable campus environment through a tree-planting initiative across its campus grounds. The activity represents a practical step in advancing UNP’s Green Campus efforts and encouraging greater environmental awareness across the university community.

The tree-planting initiative is part of UNP’s broader efforts to integrate sustainability into campus development. By increasing vegetation and green spaces across the campus, the university seeks to create an environment that is not only more attractive and comfortable but also more supportive of ecological balance and the well-being of its academic community.

Each tree planted contributes to several aspects of campus sustainability. Increasing vegetation and green open spaces can help improve the campus landscape and provide ecological benefits, while additional tree cover can contribute to reducing the effects of heat within the campus environment. Trees and other vegetation also play an important role in supporting biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the initiative also provides an opportunity to strengthen a culture of environmental responsibility among students, lecturers, staff, and other members of the university community. Through direct participation in environmental activities, members of the UNP community can contribute to sustainability while developing greater awareness of the importance of protecting and maintaining the natural environment.
The initiative also supports UNP’s participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, which encourages universities around the world to strengthen their sustainability practices across different areas of campus operations, infrastructure, education and research, transportation, waste, water, and energy and climate change.

Tree planting is therefore more than an individual environmental activity. It represents a long-term investment in the campus environment and reflects the role of higher education institutions in promoting sustainable practices. By integrating green spaces and environmental stewardship into campus life, UNP demonstrates how universities can contribute to broader sustainability goals through practical and community-based initiatives.

Through its Green Campus efforts, Universitas Negeri Padang continues to encourage its academic community to take part in building a more sustainable future. Every tree planted today can become part of a greener campus for future generations, while collective environmental action can help foster a stronger culture of sustainability within higher education.
